In the 1930s, many German people thought that the Jews had to be removed to build the utopia for Germans. Finally they resorted to Holocaust which was the murder of about six million Jews by the Nazis.

Seeing this tragedy, Sugihara Chiune saved thousands of Jews. He continued to write visas for Jewish refugees without permission from Foreign Ministry. He did not stop writing them till he left Lithuania. He had to resign from the diplomatic service after he returned to Japan. After his retirement, he did not lead a happy life. But he received Israel’s highest honor in 1985.

I respect his courageous behavior as Japanese. Although he did good things, he lost many things. But I think that people who were saved by him have never forgotten his action.
